There are two main kinds of facial tattoos - cosmetic and decorative. Cosmetic tattoos consist of eyebrows, eye liners, and lip liners. Decorative tattoos traditionally have been associated with various indigenous cultures, especially Polynesian cultures, such as the Maori people. In fact the word “tattoo” is derived from the Samoan word “tatau.” Even today, some members of Polynesian indigenous societies will choose do have tattoos placed on various parts of their bodies, including the face. In modern society, facial tattoos are often associated with criminals and gang membership. For example, a teardrop tattoo signifies that someone the person knew was killed. Some gang members or prisoners get copious facial and neck tattoos, precluding a return to normal civic life.
In the laser removal of facial tattoos, there are several considerations. Primary among them is the person’s goal for the removal. The most common stated reason for desiring to remove a cosmetic tattoo is that it does not look the way that they had been promised or that it was intended to look. Eyebrow tattoos may be placed unevenly or asymmetrically. Lip liner tattoos are difficult to place exactly evenly. Also, these tattoos may change color over time, sometimes becoming purplish after years of wear. Decorative tattoos carry a much higher stigma in modern society. Unlike body tattoos, such as the lower back or upper arm, facial tattoos suggest that the person has probably been in jail or in a gang. They are a definite impediment for upward mobility in most circles. Thus, someone desiring to have such tattoos removed is often seeking a better life for themselves.
Removing cosmetic facial tattoos with a laser poses some challenges. One is that certain tattoos inks contain iron-based pigments. When treated with the laser, these inks may change from a brown to a black color and be very difficult to remove. Usually, a test spot is in order to make sure that the person wants to proceed with treatment. Another challenge is the location of the tattoo. Eye liner tattoos require secure eye protection, in the form of metal eye shields that are inserted under the eyelids. This cumbersome procedure makes it impractical for many physicians to remove these tattoos. Also, there is the risk of damage to eyelashes from the laser. For these reasons, we do not perform eye liner tattoo removal at Tattoo MD.
The laser removal of decorative facial tattoos is similar to the laser treatment of body tattoos. In fact, the face is generally more resistant to damage from heat than certain other areas, such as the hands or neck. The face is a very sensitive area, however, and requires care with anesthetics and cooling devices to minimize pain. As with cosmetic tattoos, even when not involving the eyelids, eye protection with goggles is necessary to prevent a stray laser shot from accidentally injuring the eye.
Facial tattoo removal has additional concerns in addition to the usual considerations for the laser tattoo removal. One should examine the reasons for their dissatisfaction with their facial tattoo and then do appropriate research on whether laser treatment is appropriate for them.
