These are all hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. That is, they are naturally occurring substances that can be injected within and under the skin to smooth away wrinkles and fill out specific areas. Hyaluronic acid fillers are similar to collagen but last longer and do not require skin testing for allergies. Juvederm is made by Allergan, the makers of Botox, while Restylane and Perlane are sold by Medicis. They are all FDA-approved. Perlane differs from Juvederm and Restylane in that it uses a larger molecule of hyaluronic acid and is used to fill deeper and larger wrinkles. It also lasts somewhat longer than restylane.

To minimize discomfort, Lidocaine anesthetic is injected or anesthetic cream is used topically to numb the areas being treated. After treatment with Juvederm, results can be seen immediately. Effects last approximately 6-8 months, but up to 12 months in some cases of Juvederm or Perlane. The treatment may be repeated as desired.
